Note to Colleagues after the Hospital Clinical Staff Meeting: I was coming back to the PICU to compose some responses, raise some questions and offer ideas that were triggered by tonight's meeting. However, my job being what it is, clinical circumstances intervened. My comments will be brief. First, let me offer thanks for the opportunity to hear some of issues presented officially and to air some questions and concerns. I happened upon a crisis that needed immediate attention. A 14 year old girl had a cardiac arrest. Our efforts at resuscitation were not successful. At this point in the evening I can only make one request. If I thought it would help, I would beg. Can I please never again hear the term "patient throughput?" I read Forbes, I can recite portions of the business school curriculum, I understand many concepts in business and the theories behind them. I respect the necessity of financial expertise and stewardship of our resources. Her name was Gloria. |
