Role Play with Bear

“What’s he doing?” I ask,
pointing to her orange bear.

“He just waiting!” she answers,
looking at the bear in her lap,
dropping her “g” the way I do—
the way we both have always done.

Despite everything, my mother has not forgotten
how hard consonants can be
or how soft vowels can make everything,
from bears to bad news.

She just waiting too.
