The middle aged mechanic,
riddled with metastases,
sat in the doctor’s office
as the oncologist discussed the need
for yet another cancer drug
in hopes of stemming the disease.

Hands quiet in his lap,
the stricken man stared
at blotches on his arms,
silent until he rose to leave.
“Doc, do you know anyone
who wants to buy an ‘80 Ford?”
