Melanie Carver

Your labium superius
is beauty surpassed,
with its stratified
squamous epithelium
made striking by
the curve to your philtrum,
firmness of your frenulum—
modest melanocytes,
o so soft, o so bright.

I envision seeing through
to the apical surface
to the thrilling pulsing
of your labial branches,
with a deft caress
I ride the vermilion border
and tease your trigeminal nerve
to a glad zygomatic rise
of your august risorius,
whereby I count myself
the faithful recipient of joy.
