Donelle Dreese

She has no fear of her body.

When she drank the olive oil and lemon juice
the gallstones drained from her
like an overturned bag of marbles.

When others see sickness, she sees
a farmer who knows when to bring
the horses back to the barn.

When others see pain, she sees
love notes from the divine
saying make a change, do it now.

I’ve seen her wandering the city
offering sprigs of rosemary to strangers
wearing a wildflower trail with no signposts.

Once after lying on her table, I drove home
flushed and endorphin drunk
in love with everyone.

This is the body’s birthright
a cool balm for burning limbs
an oil for every friction.
